I am greatly honoured on behalf of the Kenya Episcopal Conference to address you on this important occasion when we Launch the Kenya Catholic Doctors  Association.

The Catholic Church has since the beginning engaged in Evangelization through the Social Ministry. She has engaged in many social Programmes among them the health apostolate.

The Social Teaching of the Church guides this apostolate thus helping in the perpetuation of Christ‚  Healing Ministry. When Christ came to Nazara and read the scroll, He proclaimed the year of favour from the Lord.

The spirit of the Lord is on me, for He has anointed me to bring the good news to the afflicted. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives, sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim a year of favour from the Lord‚ Luke 4:18 -19

We also today launch the Kenya Catholic Doctors‚ Association as a part of our celebration of the Year of Faith, the Year of the Lord.

The Social Teaching of the Catholic Church in addressing the Common Good foresees the Solidarity and subsidiarity of people working for their progress and development culminating in Communities living in peace through Justice. This in the words of the Holy Father in his message on the World Day of Peace cannot be unless there is total respect for Life, its sanctity and the dignity of the human person. This is the reason that the Catholic Church engages in the area of health care, to ensure the Physical health of each person.

This happens in some of the most difficult areas where infrastructure levels are minimal or absent. The preferential option for the poor in the spirit of  Christ the healer‚  urges the church on.

The Sanctity of Life and its fundamental principle, .Life begins at the Conception and ends with natural death‚ are under threat from worldly forces devoid of faith.

The Catholic Church calls upon her faithful and all people of good will to appreciate the gift of life and safeguard it from the moment of conception to natural death. The Catholic Church will therefore continue to urge its Professionals especially in the medical and health care areas to be vigilant and to stand up for the moral principles and standards, as willed by God and promoted by the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church,  The perfect teacher in matters of Faith and morals

The Catholic Church will continue to facilitate the coming together of such other Professionals, forming groups and Associations of the faithful in furtherance of their Divine and Professional Vocations. These associations are to be encouraged but above all, are to be founded on solid faith, constant prayer and reflection and mutual sharing to strengthen their professional life.

It is therefore a good reason to celebrate as we Launch such an Association, the Kenya Catholic Doctors Association, bringing together Catholic Doctors to enable them walk the journey of faith in their profession and in Communion with each other and the Church. The Church in the Spirit of Christ invites all the Catholic Doctors to find in this Association, an opportunity to live the invitation of Christ,

You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled under peoples  feet. You are light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in people sight, so that, seeing your good works, they may give praise to your Father in heaven  Mt 5: 13 -16

This invitation which guided the second Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops remains relevant among the people of God and all Associations of faith from one generation to another. It is even more relevant in this Year of Faith in which context we launch this Association. This invitation fundamentally means a life of Holiness, in a world that is becoming anti-Christ each new day.

Dear Catholic Doctors, allow yourselves to be enlightened by the Gospel so that your eyes of faith may penetrate the misleading attraction of the World that proclaims anti-life principles and courageously stand and be counted.

This Association was foreseen by the Kenya Episcopal Conference a long time ago. Its Launch too has been long overdue. However, it is here today and we are happy that it is part of our celebration of the Year of Faith announced by the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI starting in October 2012 to November 2013. The Kenya Episcopal Conference will continue to support and mould you in faith. That is why the adoption of your statutes includes the Episcopal Chaplaincy of the Bishop for the time being, In-charge of the Catholic Health Commission of Kenya. On behalf of all the Bishops and indeed the Catholic Church in Kenya, we will ensure that you are assisted in all questions that will add value to your Professional life.

I invite you, in the spirit of the Hippocratic Oath to rise, witness, and evangelize the medical and health care world. Christ has called you and He will strengthen you. In all your joys and sufferings in the defence of the dignity of the human person and sanctity of Life, turn the Beatitudes into your personal prayer and see Christ in every step of the way.

Blessed are those who are persecuted in the cause of uprightness: the kingdom of Heaven is theirs. Blessed are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven; this is how they persecuted the prophets before you Mt 5: 10-12

As you do all that appertains to your statutes, be assured of our unfailing support and prayers.

It is now my honour and privilege, on behalf of the Kenya Episcopal Conference to declare the Kenya Catholic Doctors Association Officially Launched.

I thank you.

His Eminence, John Cardinal Njue
